Sales or Scale?

Exploring what it really takes to scale, and making sense of natural flavors

At Evolve, we know that growth isn’t just about increasing sales, it’s about being prepared to scale. Many companies rush into expansion without the right infrastructure in place, and this can lead to bigger problems down the road.

Before scaling, ask yourself:

✔️ Can your supply chain keep up with higher demand?

✔️ Are your quality and safety processes up to the task?

✔️ Do you have the systems to sustain long-term growth?

Scaling isn’t a race; it’s about building the foundation first. Let’s make sure your business is ready for the next step. 🚀

Tip of the Month!

Every company aims for increased SALES.

But before pursuing growth, ask yourself: Are you truly READY TO SCALE?

It’s a common misconception that low sales figures indicate readiness for rapid expansion. Scaling your food or beverage brand too quickly might seem like a sign of success but without the right foundation, it can lead to chaos. Research shows that a large percentage of high-growth startups fail due to premature scaling, often because they lack the infrastructure needed to support increased demand.

Key operational areas to assess include:

  • SUPPLY CHAIN: A Gartner survey found that only 29% of supply chain organizations have developed the critical capabilities needed to tackle future challenges.

  • QUALITY ASSURANCE & FOOD SAFETY: Ensuring these processes can handle increased volume is crucial to prevent compromising product integrity.

Scaling isn't just about boosting sales; it's about meeting demand and sustaining long-term success without compromising quality, safety, or your brand's reputation.

So, is your company OPERATIONALLY ready to scale?

The Truth About Natural Flavors

Natural flavors are everywhere but are they truly clean-label? Consumers are becoming more aware of the ingredients in their food, and flavors are often at the center of controversy. While many prefer no added flavors, taste and cost considerations often drive purchasing decisions.

Here’s what you should know about the different types of flavors:

✅ Artificial flavors: Fully synthetic and commonly used in ultra-processed foods. They often contain hidden artificial preservatives and solvents that aren’t listed on labels.

✅ Natural flavors: Sourced from real food ingredients, but they may still include carriers, solvents, and additives like propylene glycol or polysorbate 80, which some consumers want to avoid. Transparency is key—natural flavors should specify their source for consumer trust.

✅ Organic-certified natural flavors: The cleanest option, adhering to strict USDA organic regulations that prohibit synthetic solvents, emulsifiers, and GMOs. However, they come at a higher cost.

💡 Our Take? If possible, avoid added flavors altogether and let whole ingredients shine. But when flavors are necessary, choose organic-certified or clean-label natural flavors that eliminate unnecessary carriers and additives.
